I was just wondering, does colours really mean alot to u? Like do u make sure the colour of your blouse or shirt goes with the colour of your skirt or pants? Or u just grab what is in the closet n wear it out?

Post 2 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Friday, 14-Dec-2007 9:12:10

I'm self-conscious if the colors i'm wearing don't match, for some odd reason.

Post 3 by Izzito (This site is so "educational") on Friday, 14-Dec-2007 10:50:21

well it shouldn't but it should lol.
I mean myself i always wanna be presentable so I always try my best to match colors and such.

Post 4 by HotPerro (I live and breathe the board) on Friday, 14-Dec-2007 16:44:56

It is important to look presentable whether you are blind or not. To avoid having to match too much, I mostly wear jeans and dark t-shirts, but I have more colorful clothes that I've learned to match.

Post 5 by changedheart421 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Friday, 14-Dec-2007 16:50:08

I wear jeans and polo shirts usually so yeah guess it matters but not really

Post 6 by bozmagic (The rottie's your best friend if you want him/her to be, lol.) on Friday, 14-Dec-2007 17:13:48

Ah, well jeans and polo shirts aren't necessarily presentable, lol. I still live at home, thanks to fucking house prices lol, so mum's forever going on about mmatching colours, she wants every bloody thing on this earth to match with something else that's meant to pair up with it, especially hers and my clothes, so this over the years, has made me extremely self-conscious, so now, I won't leave this room or my room at home for example, if I think the colours of a pair of trousers and a top I've just put on, don't match. I'll go through everything in my wardrobe, desperate to find a good match if there's a certain pair of trousers or a certain top I want to wear on a particular day. If I don't find a match, I take it all off and change, make do with something other than what I wanted to wear. I dunno, It's just the way I turned out.

I used to have decent vision. But even now that I don't, I still want to know the colors I wear look good together. As much of a nuisance as this may be, any blind person who appears in public looking sloppy and wearing weird color combinations is going to affect the sighties out there and make them think blind people are helpless and don't care or don't know anything about their appearance.

Post 8 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Friday, 14-Dec-2007 23:01:33

I've never seen colours, but I always try to match as well. Mom kind of drilled it into me (you live in a sighted world, not a blind one." I mean, I don't go stark raving mad if I don't match, but I certainly try my best to do so.

Post 9 by AngelKisses (An angel with no Halo) on Saturday, 15-Dec-2007 2:48:07

It's not hard to match. Grab some blue jeans and any shirt will match it. Now like dressy type clothes slacks or skirt wear black and your fine because everything goes with black. The stupid stuff that I think, people have told me they do this even if they are blind, like if they are wearing a red shirt, they have HAVE HAVE TO WEAR RED SHIRT, RED BRA, RED PANTIES, RED SOCKS, AND A RED HAIR TIE OF SOME SORT. nOW THAT IS CRAZY! Who's gonan know if you got on a red bra or a white one? But yeah, some people take it to the extreme. I jsut wear white socks or whatever and blue jeans pants or shorts sometimes even skirt and whatever top I feel like it. Sorry for the all caps, didn't realise it and I don't feel like typing it all out again.

Post 10 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Saturday, 15-Dec-2007 9:15:47

Yeah, I have a few different coloured suits and ties for really formal occasions, but when in doubt, I just wear black or for the casual stuff, jeans, as you said, with some kind of sweatshirt or something.

Post 11 by slammy (Veteran Zoner) on Sunday, 16-Dec-2007 15:55:47

I always match even my shoes match the color of my clothes. I don't match my under clothes who cares about that has long I match on the outside.

Post 12 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 16-Dec-2007 18:12:19

I don't have any unusual styles/colors of underclothes so that's not a big thing to me as far as matching. For socks, I have mostly white socks and any that have a weird theme/color, I just make sure they would not be showing when I wear them, and/or I only wear them at home. I also try to stick with plain/solid-colored tennis and dress shoes and mostly wear heans so most of the shirts will go with those. For dresses, I mostly have full-length ones anyway. But for skirts and dress-pants, I have to ask my mom which shirts would work best with them when I do use those.

Post 13 by sophiagoh (Generic Zoner) on Sunday, 16-Dec-2007 22:18:28

ya plain is good, sometimes there are those who wear black or red bras and white blouse. I think that's a little too revealing. Ya blue jeans goes with any colors.

I've never seen colours, but I always try to match as well. Mom kind "I've never seen colours, but I always try to match as well. Mom kind of drilled it into me (you live in a sighted world, not a blind one.""

Very true. for this, I purchase 3 colors as in most cases they match.
black, blue, and white
since I'm in doubt most of the time being a total, I've limited myself to those 3 colors making it no choice but to match, hahaha.

I was going to post about us living in a sighted world, but you've beat me to it :)

I agree, that blind people should be presentable as sighted. All though I some times find it a bit hard to be like sighted people. As for colours yes I can see colours and I ask my mum what colours go with what. Usually black goes with anything so I am told. When I go on holiday my mum will tell me to ware a black bra with black clothes but the sighted guides say things like well your mum isn't here so it doesn't matter.

Post 16 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 28-Dec-2007 22:39:33

I've never seen colors, either, though I do try to picture what they might look like. As others have said here, it was drilled into me since I was little that matching was important. I'm very glad it was, too. I think it's just as important, if not more so, for us to dress well as blind people. I've even gotten told before, "Oh, you don't dress like you're totally blind." What the heck is that supposed to mean? When I hear that, I think it's a sad statement on what some blind folks must look like. I'm also not saying we have to dres up all the time or anything. God knows I love comfort clothing, jeans, t-shirts, whatever. Grooming is important too, but that's for another board. LOL

mmmmm clothes yeeha! I love shopping and adore different colours and textures which some sighted peepers can find strange for a blinnie. I got a lot of feedback via my best friend, who is a sighted peeper, on what colours I suit. Being fair skinned with red hair, you need to be careful! I love slightly unusual clothes but it's allways worth trying on that gorgious dress in case you don't feel gorgious in it. I've heard VI peepers being told not to wear highheels, shocking, where would I be without my sexy boots, lol. I think clothes are a part of our identify, allow us to express our personalities and can be a great source on which to build self-confidence.

Post 21 by Voyager (I just keep on posting!) on Thursday, 03-Apr-2008 14:47:26

I just make sure that pretty much everything I buy matches everything else. Mainly I wear kakis and blue jeans or shorts. As long as I don't go out looking like a blind bum, I'm okay. I've never seen color, nor can I understand how some relate clothing to personality. Maybe I'm missing out, but I'll never get it.

Post 22 by blw1978 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Thursday, 03-Apr-2008 19:04:35

Yes, colors do matter to me. I too wear a lot of khakis. When I buy a new pair of dress pants or khaki pants I'll ask my mom or a sighted friend what colors would look best. I've even been known to get shirts out of my closet and ask how they'd look. There are some colors that I don't like with black. Some blues, yellow, and some greens I don't particularly like. Brown is also a good neutral as is khaki green. As for clothes fitting personality, Some people are more sporty, others more businesslike and others cute and feminine. I considder myself to be pretty feminine, but I do have all kinds of clothes in my closet. I'm not really gonna wear a really flirty top on a camping trip. Hate to say it ladies, but some colors and fabrics of bras don't work with some shirts. Be careful what bra you wear with a top made of a stretchy or clingy fabric. When in doubt, choose a nude bra, not a white one. Believe it or not, but some white bras will show under a white shirt. Same concept applies for undies and pants.

I live in a house full of ladies (my mom, and two sisters) they're all helpfull when it comes to clothes matching. I believe that you should always leave the house matching, and looking cute. I love clothes, and shopping. I'm a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. I know how to dress up for a night in the city, and love doing so sometimes. I'm not the type to wear slacks, or skirts, but I'm going to have to start. Freaking dress codes suck lol. At least I'll be dressing for success but with cute clothes lol.

Post 25 by DancingAfterDark (I just keep on posting!) on Thursday, 03-Apr-2008 21:59:45

The colors of your clothes should always matter. As has already been said, it's a sighted world whether you like it or not, and it doesn't take much extra effort to make sure you look presentable and don't clash too horribly. I have friends and relatives who never hesitate to tell me what looks good and what I should never be seen wearing in public, and I take their advice. Once you get down what matches with what, as long as you know the colors of your clothes, it's not so difficult to do it yourself, but I always like to ask a sighted person's opinion before going out if it's possible. I typically just wear blue jeans and t-shirts/sweaters, depending on the season, but I don't like wearing the same things for long, so I have khakis and skirts and very strange random hippie-type clothes and all sorts of things. And I like my jewelry/hair accessories to match what I'm wearing, but not everybody does.

Post 26 by tiny_toons (Generic Zoner) on Saturday, 17-May-2008 21:48:36

well for me its important to match i am a young girl who has the same interests and needs as sited girls. mum will alway's tell me if something looks odd and my cousins are a grait help in selecting the right clothes they say it how it is which is a good thing.

Post 27 by blw1978 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Tuesday, 20-May-2008 15:24:00

Just as important as matching colors is the style clothes you wear. It's not going to matter what colors a person is wearing, if their clothes don't fit propperly. My family/friends are really great about telling me what styles are flattering and which ones are not. I've found that the internet is a great resource as far as figuring out what styles look good for my figure type. For the poster who mainly buys black white and blue, please know that there are lots of other colors you can choose that'll go with those. If you're nervous about color overload, why not try buying a couple things in one or two new colors and seeing if they'll match stuff you already own. I think Khaki whether light or darrk goes well with just about any color. Especially bright ones like pink, orange or yellow. I like lighter khaki with blue or light purple.

Post 29 by Miss Prism (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Tuesday, 27-May-2008 3:34:15

It's important to look presentable, as everyone else has said, whether that means you wear all black all the time, or not. I admire those of you who try new styles and such. I don't, because right now I don't have a local friend who I trust to give me reliable advice. Girlfriends typically love doing that sort of thing, though, only find those friends who will make suggestions, but still respect your own comfort level. (For instance, it would bother me to have a friend insist that I wear above the knee skirts, which I'm not comfortable in.)

Anyway, as others have said, jeans go with nearly anything, and dresses are good because that eliminates the need for matching tops and skirts.

Lately, I've been interested in adding scarves for color and just to have something new, but I need to ask someone's opinion on that. I don't want to go out of the house looking like a freak.. Sighted strangers have asked who dresses me, before, or sounded surprised that I choose my own clothes, but I think that's just a product of their ignorance of the whole subject, and what they imagine is the impossibility of it all, rather than that so many other blind people dress sloppily, or are mismatched. I don't know any blind people who simply don't care about appearance. If that is the case, I would guess that that person just feels overwhelmed by all that they don't know about colors, and how to choose matching garments, and so instead of finding out, they've just given up.

Post 30 by Pure love (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Monday, 02-Jun-2008 6:07:49

No not really. I mean people say when I wear black it looks strict, but for me it makes me look thinner lol. So, no, they aren't that iportant to me.

Post 31 by Calli Girl (Generic Zoner) on Tuesday, 03-Jun-2008 10:53:59

I wear mostly jeans since they match with anything, and I have quite a few items in black in my closet. But I'd honestly like to get more colored clothing, provided I would get someone sighted help me to match the items, or get a better color detector. It's been drilled in to me too that matching makes you look better. although honestly, I'm not the type that has to match accessories with clothing. I used to be. But now I could really care less. As long as I look presentable (like the clothes are matching and not full of wrinkles, lol) then I'm fine.

Post 32 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Tuesday, 10-Jun-2008 16:15:02

Yeah, I mostly wear jeans and T-shirts too, mostly because, as other people said, jeans go with anything. I wear a lot of black, but not because it matches everything, I wear it to make a statement, but I do wear other colors too, but I almost always wear jeans. ButI do understand how important it is to dress up in certain situations, like job interviews, so I don't see it as a problem that I walk around wearing mostly T-shirts with names of bands on them, because I do know you can't do that everywhere.

Post 34 by Harmony (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 17-Jun-2009 14:39:24

I've kind of been told what colors my clothes are and remember what top goes with what skirt or which trousers or jeans and t-shirt go together. Sometimes I just take stuff out of the cupboard and put it on, but most of the time I like them to go together. Well my yellow top and black trouses that I'm wearing right now probably don't go together very well, but I was told my top looked nice on me earlier. Most of the time I wear socks that are black or white because multi colored ones are just annoying to pair up and for shoes I mostly wear flat ones but high heels are OK as long as they're not so high you can hardly walk in them.

Post 35 by Miss Gorgeous (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 17-Jun-2009 17:20:21

To me it matters, I can see enough to destinguish different colors and such. I always make sure that my blouse, shirts, and tops matches my shorts, pants, and skirts. It takes me longer to dress, but I would rather take longer and look presentable than look like I just woke up. I like matching different colors. My favorite colors are light blue, black, red, pink, and green. I'm okay with the color yellow and orange, but I'm not a fan of those. White is okay, but I d rather wear dark colors than light colors.

Post 36 by Lithium (Generic Zoner) on Saturday, 20-Jun-2009 0:04:15

When I am at home, gone to walmart, or to the grocery store then jeans and t-shirts are fine. I attend a career college so dress for success is how I show up in. I also dress up if I'm going to a sit down restaurant. The summer time is really good for dresses too. Just slip in to your cute little number and there goes your outfit. Then all you need is your accessories and style your hair. Easy breezy.

Post 37 by turricane (happiness and change are choices ) on Monday, 22-Jun-2009 12:13:33

i love love love clothes and jewelry too. when i was young we didn't have much to spend on fashion. Now that I have some expendable income that's where it goes!!

One thing I have always found interesting. If a sighted lady pares unusual things together, say plaid with flowers, she is being creative. Therefor you will never see me wearing a red top with a purple skirt and a green vest. My good friend terri does that and she's a "free thinker artistic gal." If we do that we are ignorant slobs.

I usually buy things as an outfit and wear them together. Dresses are one of my fashion staples as they are an outfit in an instant. Additionally, I'm a big fan of long skirts as you don't have to worry about the one item of clothing which I totally despise - hose which for those guys among us are stockings or tights.

I usually try to pair shoes with outfits. I'm a big ballet flat gal. Heels are great, but I'm not big on coordination, so comfort is the key for me. I usually wear black shoes in the winter and more colorful ones in summer.

If you really want to learn a lot about clothes, watch what not to wear on tlc. It's amazing what i've done wrong all my life simply because i didn't know. Sighted folk led me in to some of those fashion faux pas too. My biggest error was wearing a big top with a full skirt. That made me look like a box on legs. Now i know big top narrow skirt big skirt narrow top.

There are i think six neutral colors, which are black, blue, gray, brown red, and white. Anything in the color pallet can go with any of those. ADditionally there are the new neutrals like kakhi taupe, and I forget what else. Hope this helps.

Oh yes, I never dress like a pig to go grocery shopping. Sure as I'm talking to you now, I'll run in to some person I haven't seen in 20 years. It's so embarrassing!!!

Post 38 by blw1978 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Wednesday, 24-Jun-2009 12:15:57

Hi, one phrase that might work better for this board is coordinate. For one thing, matching clothes by pairing one shade of say green with that exact shade can actually bee too much. but, if say you wanted to pair a shade of yellow of green, it might match int he traditional sense, but it could very coordinate very nicely. Another tip I've learned is that matching too many accessories such as matching your shoes to a handbag is actually kind of dated. I've heard this from more than one source, so I try not to overmatch accessories. For those of you who'd like to try new color, why not do an internet search to find out what looks good with certain colors. Trinnie and Susana, the What Not to Wear girls from the BBC have some good advice on their website. I can't remember the name of the site off hand, so just type Trinnie and Susana in the search bar. One color I'd add to the above-mentioned list of neutrals is Khaki Green. It might sound like a weird color, but pairs nicely with Khaki brown, white, yellow, gray, light pink, some other shades of green, particularly lighter ones, and black. HOnestly, I stay away from red and and navy blue. These have always been difficult colors for me to master. As far as neutrals, I prefer browns and gray to black, but that's just me. I generally find these colors more versatile. Ladies, don't forget to keep in mind hair and complexion shades, as these can really help you determine what colors look best. Hth.

Post 39 by Lindsay3.14 (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Thursday, 25-Jun-2009 3:13:38

Yes, sometimes they does! :D

In all seriousness though, color matching for me usually depends on the circumstance. I'm not the type of person who likes to spend significant time coordinating outfits, and on most days I just wear jeans or sweats, which practically match anything. For this reason, I don't usuallly bother with colors. If I have to dress up, however, matching colors can be a big deal, so in order to prevent myself from loking like the stereotypical bumbling blind person who can't dress herself, I do make an effort to ensure that my clothes match. As far as the visual colors themselves are concerned, I could care less. I have learned from memorization which of my work outfits match (though I have no clue about the colors of any of them), which solves the color problem in the majority of cases. I could still learn much more about color coordination, which could eventually become useful. I personally find most things clothing-related to be excruciatingly boring, though, so have been putting off that task.

Post 40 by SFAIdol (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Thursday, 16-Jul-2009 21:39:00

Although I really don't care about what I wear, I have been told that color does matter, so I am conscious of it. When I was yunger, I ordered color tags to sew onto the tags of my shirts. That worked for a while. However, I have so many clothes now that I haven't had any sewn in a long time. I like wearing comfort clothes most of the time, mostly because that's what I like to wear. However, I do wear some "cool" clothes from "cool" brands. As for the underclothes, yesterday, I was getting ready to go to the doctor's office. My mother had me change my bra, since you could tell what color bra I was wearing, since my shirt was the same color. I think it was a white bra with a white shirt. Totally crazy, but as previously stated, we live in a sighted world, so hwe have to dress for success.
